When will it be possible to apply for the Digital Nomad Visa from Spanish Consulates and Embassies?

1st of March 2023

Since the Digital Nomad Visa has been approved in Spain, we have received many enquiries over the last few weeks about how the application process works.

This visa, intended for non-European citizens working remotely, can be applied for from the Spanish Consulate or Embassy in the applicant’s country of residence or directly from Spain.

Unfortunately, for the moment, Consulates and Embassies have not yet incorporated the procedure to apply for the Visa as a digital nomad. We have not yet received any information about the requirements and documentation requested by each consulate.

Therefore, at the moment it is only possible to apply for the visa if the applicant is in Spain. To be able to submit the application from our country, you need to be in a regular situation, that means:

  • You have entered Spain as a tourist because you hold a passport from a country that does not require a Schengen visa and you are still within the 90-day period.
  • You have entered Spain with a Schengen visa and you still have days left.
  • You are already residing in Spain as a holder of a Student visa, which has not yet expired.
  • You are already residing in Spain as a holder of a residence permit, work permit, etc., which has not yet expired.

We hope that in the coming months of March and April the Embassies and Consulates will begin to incorporate the procedure so that those digital nomads who are abroad can apply for this visa from their country of origin or residence.

If you wish to apply for this visa as soon as possible, we recommend that you come directly to Spain and carry out the procedures from here. The process from Spain is faster, as you will receive a response to your application in just 20 working days. In addition, the visa is granted for 3 years, unlike consulates and embassies that will only give you a visa valid for 1 year.
